Good morning teachers and students,
Chong Yang Day and Halloween in the past two weeks let us know the difference between how western and eastern cultures treat the dead. Not knowing the meaning of living, how to understand death? This is a famous saying from Confucius. This is to say that living and death are the two sides of life. As a living thing, we have to face death eventually. What is the meaning of death then?
You probably have once read the book The Fall of Freddie The Leaf and Where does the wind go? When leaves fall in autumn or fall, you might say it’s died. But it will turn into fertilizer, for the new leaves growing on the tree next spring. When things do not feel the brush of the wind, it seems that wind has disappeared, but in fact, it is merely blowing in elsewhere. Neither the leaves nor the wind has died, it is only existing in another place, in another form. From living to dead, everything experiences the coming and going of life. Life comes and goes, but it never runs out or disappears completely.
Chuang Tzu once said, “birth then death, death then birth”, In his perspective, people’s life is the transformation of energy. Birth is the converge of energy, while death is the vanishment of energy. As the energies of the world coalesce and disperse, life alternates with each other.
Death doesn’t represent gone forever, however, it isn’t meaningless. To die is not to be feared, but to live for unknown reasons. The meaning of death is that it makes us think about the meaning of life. In the book The Cat who Lived a Million Times, the cat did not live to be itself until the millionth time. Buddha said, life is precious, do we really have the chance to live a million times? we are born as human beings, we should think seriously about where we come from and what is our mission.
