What is Orange Shirt Day?

Orange Shirt Day commemorates the indigenous children of Canada who were forced to attend residential schools, where they were forbidden to speak their language, compelled to adopt “white” culture, and often physically and emotionally abused.

The orange shirt comes from the anecdote of Phyllis Webstad, whose beloved orange shirt given to her by her grandmother was taken from her on the first day of school. Today, an orange shirt represents the family, tradition and identity that was taken away from the Indigenous Peoples of Canada. It's also a reminder of “Every Child Matters” and that every child deserves to be treated with dignity, respect and kindness.

Every Child Matters at CIS

What does this tagline mean? "Every Child Matters" reminds all of us that everyone’s cultural experiences are important. This is an important statement, because it allows us to come together in the spirit of hope and reconciliation as we commemorate the survivors of the residential school system.

"CIS is a Canadian school and there is no Canadian Culture without the Indigenous Peoples, from the Inukshuk at our school gate, to the Canoe in the ceiling of our building in which Indigenous peoples travel. We honor Orange Shirt Day here at CIS because that is what it means to be Canadian. We want to learn from the history so we won't repeat it. It's important that we learn it today and build a better future for our children," says Mr. Brett Fawcett, our High School Social Studies teacher who led this cultural event at CIS.

Orange Shirt Day at CIS

Since the start of this week, CIS students have spent time learning, thinking and discussing more about residential schools and about the tagline “Every Child Matters”. Volunteers from Grade 10 created a presentation explaining these profound concepts in simpler terms so that our younger students would understand.

During the week, students also created a “shirt” on a handout, expressing what is unique and valuable about themselves and their culture. Some of them painted stones to express their individuality. Our Grade 7-8 and 10-11 students created a “museum exhibit” about the residential schools in the Learning Commons.

So the next time you see someone wear an orange shirt, do take a moment to explain the significance of an orange shirt to Canadians, and remind them that yes, every child matters.
