Reading – 3 is the magic number

As part of Literacy Week, K1 – P1 parents were invited to attend a reading focused coffee morning hosted by Ms McNamee, Ms Packman and Ms Wadley. During this session, parents were given an insight into the three steps to reading: understanding print, understanding language and understanding how the world works. When an understanding of the world, language and print act together as a team, reading happens. All three go hand in hand. One of the best ways we can support our children daily is to provide opportunities for them to experience print and language through conversations with others, songs, rhymes and of course books. Words are essential in building the thought connections in the brain and the more language a child experiences, the more advantaged they will be. Experts believe that children need to hear a thousand stories read aloud before they begin to learn to read themselves. A thousand! Although this number sounds daunting, parents were quite surprised how easily this can be achieved in just one year by reading three stories a day: one favourite, one familiar and one new. Towards the end of the session, parents explored a variety of ‘reading stations’ set up to help support children with their reading at home. These included setting up a bedtime routine to read together, creating a ‘writer’s corner’ at home and completing reading responses to develop children's thoughts and comprehension.

作為語言文化周的一部分,幼兒園及小學(xué)低段校長(zhǎng)帕克曼女士,英語學(xué)科組長(zhǎng)沃德利女士及小學(xué)部一年級(jí)年級(jí)組長(zhǎng)麥克內(nèi)米女士共同主持了本周四的咖啡晨會(huì)。本次晨會(huì)以閱讀為主題,邀請(qǐng)了幼兒園小班至小學(xué)一年級(jí)的家長(zhǎng)前來參加。在晨會(huì)上,三位老師給家長(zhǎng)介紹了閱讀“三步法”:讀懂圖案、理解語言、了解世界是如何運(yùn)作的。這三者相得益彰,形成閱讀的過程。日常生活中,我們可以幫助孩子的最佳方式是為他們提供各式各樣的機(jī)會(huì)去學(xué)習(xí)圖案和語言,通過與他人交談、唱歌、讀詩(shī)以及閱讀書籍。文字對(duì)于在大腦中建立思想之間的關(guān)聯(lián)至關(guān)重要,而孩子接觸的語言越多,受益越深。專家認(rèn)為,孩子在學(xué)會(huì)自己閱讀之前,需要先聽上千個(gè)故事。上千個(gè)!盡管這個(gè)數(shù)字令人望而生畏,但是如果每天閱讀三個(gè)故事(一個(gè)最喜歡的、一個(gè)熟悉的和一個(gè)新故事),一年之內(nèi)就能輕松實(shí)現(xiàn)這個(gè)目標(biāo)。在晨會(huì)結(jié)束之前,家長(zhǎng)們參觀了老師精心布置的“閱讀角”,共同探索如何幫助孩子在家中養(yǎng)成良好的閱讀習(xí)慣。家長(zhǎng)可以嘗試睡前與孩子一起閱讀,在家里布置一個(gè)“寫作角”并讓孩子寫讀后感,從而拓展孩子的思維,提高理解能力。
