One by One, Line by Line

Welcome back, students, parents, and teachers! It's wonderful to see your smiling faces again. The school seems to come alive when you are here. We look forward to another great year!
Today, I want to share with you three concepts that I hope all RDF students and teachers will embrace this year.
First, when you change your role, you change your behavior.
Some of you are students and some of you are teachers. But this year, I hope that you will all see yourselves as teachers AND learners. Learn as much as you can and teach as much as you can. Learn Chinese and English, and teach Chinese and English—everywhere.
Imagine teachers and students sitting together helping each other to become bilingual.
This happened to me this summer. I spent hours in the canteen with the school staff practicing Chinese. My Chinese vocabulary improved. I still have a long way to go. So I'll make you a deal. You teach me Chinese, and I will teach you English! How does that sound?
By the end of the school year, my Chinese and your English will improve a lot. Okay?
Second, people learn “l(fā)ine by line.”
Line by line means learning one concept at a time. Each class will require you to grapple with a concept that can be stated in a simple sentence. Most concepts will be short and memorable. You should learn new concepts every day in each class. During the year, you will learn over 1,000 simple concepts. I hope many of you will learn much, much, more. These simple statements will give you tremendous new knowledge, skill, and wisdom.
Third, we learn “one by one.”
True, we can learn in large classroom lectures. But more lessons come when we speak with others “one by one.” One by one conversation.
In review, consider yourselves, teacher and learners, learn line by line, and learn one conversation at a time.
Now, a few announcements:
This year we have a planner and student handbook for each of you students. Use it to manage your time and track your assignments. We expect you to use it. It includes a list of all the rules that we expect you to follow. Please take care of this book.
We hope you enjoy these changes.
Additionally, we are continuing the house system. You will continue earning points for your house by teaching language everywhere and doing good work. You will learn more about this soon.
Finally, I remind you that by attending RDF International School, you are committing to follow an honor code that expects you to be kind, to respect your peers and teachers, to do your coursework, and to maintain appropriate relationships. Try to never do or say anything that would bring shame you or your family. When you make a mistake, admit it, correct it, and move on. There is so much to learn this year. Let’s focus on learning, and let’s all be friendly and kind.
