Greetings Class of 2018:
Congratulations once again on your achievement last week. It is no small accomplishment to have gained proficiency in a foreign language, adapted to an entirely new college admissions system, and gained entry into some of the world’s top colleges, so be proud of yourselves.
As you embark on your journeys to the United States and beyond allow me to provide a few words of wisdom.
For any teenager, going to college is an important rite of passage that stirs inside many emotions. Somehow you may feel excited yet anxious, optimistic yet sad all at the same time. This is normal. To go to a new place (city, state or country) to live is both exciting, for the many new experiences you will have, and sad, because for most of you it will be the longest time you have ever been away and the farthest distance you have ever traveled from home. Going to a foreign land and facing a whole new culture is also at first a little scary until you learn to fit in and discover all of the new possibilities this experience now provides you. I have experienced what it feels like to go to universities far from home and to live abroad in totally different cultures. Therefore, I say with confidence that as long as you open yourself up to new experiences,be careful in your decision making, and maintain a positive attitude everything will be ok.
Hard work and continuous study have helped you reach this moment. However, I encourage you all to now make more time than you ever have before to also incorporate social activities into your daily lives. The most valuable experience from college may actually be the relationships you build and not necessarily the knowledge you acquire. Knowing the right people well can open doors for you that no amount of study can, socially and professionally. So, continue to work hard and be great students, but be sure to play hard too!
Always remember, in your time abroad you will be more than just college students, you are also ambassadors of China. You may be the first Chinese citizens an American ever meets, you may even be the first foreigner. Your personal conduct will reflect not only on yourself and your family but your motherland as well. Use this to your advantage, try to avoid isolating yourselves in communities of overseas Chinese, go out and befriend as many non-Chinese as possible. Spread the best parts of your culture and society to those you meet and absorb the best parts of theirs and bring it home with you when you return to China.
Doing this will enrich your college experience and theirs. It may help improve relations and understanding between our two great societies. Most importantly, it will help realize the guiding philosophy of Sendelta and our ultimate mission: creating better selves to help create a better world.
Congratulations, farewell, good luck, and please keep in touch!
