During the past few days, Tsinglan students have endured challenges of increasing difficulty as planned by the Scout leaders. Cooperation has been evident among all classes, and we have been responsible for each other under all circumstances and gone beyond the borders or our individual personalities. If it sounds melodramatic, please know that every member of the student body understands and does it in action.
Belle Yan G7-4:
Nelson Mandela said, “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” This was the theme of this year’s Scout Camp, and we have undergone many adversities so far. In the scorching sun, we worked. In the scorching heat, we marched. On the scorching sand, we gathered. We have faced out physical limits, our fears, and the harshness of nature. This has led to a feeling of achievement in ourselves, and of gratitude for our teachers and Scout leaders. The most important value we are learning is resilience, the value of never giving up.
Daisy Fan G7-2:
The challenges we faced were unique in themselves, but to achieve results required the teamwork of each individual team member. Each team member performed a specific task in order to help the team function. Everyone had a specific job because we need to gather and unite the strengths of each person. If it sounds melodramatic, please know that every member of the student body understand and does it in action.

Belle Yan G7-4:
When we were asked to spark fire from friction, the whole group was only provided with a tiny amount of fuel. We spun with all our might and had to work together to generate smoke. Finally a ruby glow adorned with a halo appeared, only to disappear moments later. After this feeling of mild disappointment, we didn’t give up and worked for over an hour in total; still there was no flame. The whole team was famished and exhausted, but we weren’t afraid of exhaustion anymore. The adversity became only a numb melody in the back of our minds. Resilience is a major part of the Scout Camp spirit. No matter where we are, resilience is part of who we are and lights the path towards success. It is the pushing force along the path towards success and future possibilities.
Daisy Fan G7-2:
Responsibility can be shown in many ways such as helping another when one is more skilled. In order for the results to be apparent and positive, every team member needs to cooperate. As examples of cooperation happen again and again within a group, each individual begins to feel responsible for the team as a whole and towards each member. This creates a positive cycle and leads to the positive results. Then, we can look at the hardships as merely a challenge, and as an opportunity to grow.
As we enjoy barbecue at the end of the day, we are extraordinarily confident and more experienced than we were to start the day. We enjoy this meal after preying on our fear, selfish habits and lack if responsibility. Taking a break from the routine of school and holidays has given us the chance to incorporate the 4Cs in action. I believe that responsibility is a pillar that supports an optimistic perspective and a willingness to work to overcome future challenges.
