Four Houses in keeping
with the spirit of Fettes College
The exceptional quality of the holistic education that Fettes College Guangzhou offers is grounded in the boarding ethos of the school and the associated House system, which reflects that of Fettes College.
At Fettes College Guangzhou, both pupils and teachers are attached to one of four groups called "houses", with each pupil being allocated to one house upon enrolment. Therefore in each at Grade at FCG pupils belong to one of the four houses, meaning that they are part of yet another family unit, in addition in their homeroom class. Houses may compete with one another at sports or during other events, thus providing a focus for group loyalty.
Each of our houses is named after an individual from whose values, achievements and character the house draws inspiration and characteristics. Two are prominent figures in Chinese culture, and two are prominent Heads of Fettes College – past and present.
Between them, these figures, and, therefore, the houses, represent a range of values, abilities and attitudes which we champion at Fettes College Guangzhou, including: kindness; fascination and curiosity; creativity; steadfastness; family; vision; duty; service; inspiration; reflection; equality; life-long learning; self-expression; dedication; nurture; discovery; and even…longevity! Each is a role model for all of us at Fettes College Guangzhou, and especially to those belonging to the houses of: Jao Tsung-I; Bing Xin; Potts; and, Harrison.
Rich boarding school heritage
Historically, the house system has been associated with established public schools in England, especially full boarding schools where a "house" referred to the physical building – the boarding house – at the school. In modern times, in both day and boarding schools, the word house may refer only to a grouping of pupils, rather than to a particular building. Houses are traditionally named after famous historical alumni or, in international schools, sometimes in honor of local celebrities or significant figures. Each house will usually also be identified by its own symbol, logo, or colours.
Home-away-from-home
for students to foster
their sense of belonging
The house system is well-established and well-loved in UK schools, not least Fettes, and the tradition is particularly developed in British independent boarding schools where students are conventionally attached to a house which is both their home-from-home – where they live, play, study and socialise when not in lessons and activities – and also provides a sense of belonging and an identity that is lasting. Strike up a conversation with any Old Fettesian (former pupil) and without prompting they will proudly tell you which house they were in, and why that matters.
Houses conventionally take their names from places of cultural significance, and people of renown either popularly, or more locally, but even those schools whose houses are only known by a number are distinguished by their own unique features, and identities. Houses often become associated with special talents and characteristics. Though these naturally evolve over time with the intake of new pupils and staff, it is common for a house to hold a set of core characteristics and values under which members unite.
讀過J.K.·羅琳(J.K.
Anyone who has read J.K. Rowling’s ‘Harry Potter’ novels, will remember the sorting hat, the conceit by which the pupils at Hogwarts are identified for their day houses: Gryffindor; Hufflepuff; Slytherin; and, Ravenclaw – each named after one of the four founding wizards of Hogwarts. By animating a magical hat with special powers to discern affiliations, J.K. Rowling seems to suggest the importance of identity and the inevitability of camaraderie that comes with the privilege of being a member of a house, and the special way a house can nurture ability and personality.
All our pupils in the Early Years Kindergarten and Primary School (and in the Middle School, in our opening year), will be allocated a Day House, and pupils will stay a member of their house until it is later time to transfer to middle and senior houses.
Fettes College Guangzhou is to be a community that stresses the central importance of strong family values. While every student will feel challenged and encouraged to be the best that they can be, that will never be at the expense of those around them. Our students will develop a deeply enshrined sense of the importance of bringing their friends and peers along with them; they will grow to understand that we are stronger together and that the achievements of a happy, successful community will always be greater than the sum of the achievements of its individual members. The house, holding collegiality and competition in balance, is at the centre of this ethos.
