Students in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) at UISG are challenged every day to change the world by being curious, independent, creative and innovative learners. Meet the UtahFresh team, who rose to meet these challenges and are now globally recognized as finalists for the 2020 MYP Student Innovator Awards.

In 2019, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the MYP, the IB organization launched the MYP Innovators Award. The Student Innovators platform and grant is an opportunity for students in the IB Middle Years Programme throughout the world to make an impact in their community as they develop in to socially conscious leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs.

The current UtahFresh leadership team (Isabel Veit, Daisy Chen, Fraze Fei, Bona Hou, and Jacky Yang) explain that the project’s inspiration first came about during a Year 8 service trip to Hui Ling farm here in Guangzhou. The group decided to develop a service project to support the organic farm’s mission to stimulate a community service model and improve the standard of life of cognitively challenged individuals through employment opportunities. After a semester of planning and development, the group launched their platform for selling and delivering Hui Ling organic vegetables within the UISG teaching community last year.

It was around this same time that the IB announced the Student Innovators award. After a rigorous application and global review process, the team learned earlier this year that their project was among the 32 finalists selected from 21 IB World Schools in 13 countries. They are the only finalists selected from a school within China. Finalists are now eligible to receive grant money to support further project development and access to platforms that encourage collaboration with a network of other student finalists and and receive guidance from a career-level or industry expert mentor through the IB’s strategic partner Ashoka.
