Dear Students and Employees,
We have come to the conclusion of the 2019–2020 school year. As we begin our summer vacations or studies, I would like to (1) share a few reflections on the past year, (2) give a brief account of our closing ceremonies, (3) impart a short message for our newly graduated seniors, and (4) share a few thoughts about how to grow during summer vacation.
Reflections about 2019–2020
The 2019–2020 school year was wonderful. As I look back on the school year, it gives me joy to think about all that was accomplished.
We enjoyed daily conversations about essential questions, principle-based reasoning, and our tutorial approach of working with students one-by-one to help them grow and achieve their academic goals.
Moreover, the school accomplished important achievements in various areas.
For example, we were recognized by the College Board and received a “CEEB code”: 694111, which is given to schools who establish official AP courses. All 16 our AP courses were officially recognized through a “course audit” process by the College Board. Great thanks to our AP coordinators and teachers for their diligent work!
Impressively, hundreds of students received honor roll and high honor roll distinctions or earned classroom awards for diligence, performance, or improvement, and the average STAR standardized reading score improved 23%! This is impressive growth!
Moreover, our Holiday traditions continued, including Orientation Activities, Halloween, Field Day, and a Christmas Performing Arts Concert and Dance! We enjoyed our academic and artistic performance traditions, including an English Storytelling Competition and Spelling Bee. I also enjoyed RDF’s clubs and ECA’s this year.
You all have had an unforgettable experience after finishing 12 weeks of online schooling! Online classes were the result of a force that was greater than you, than me, than the school: it was bigger than us all.
You demonstrated perseverance and diligence as you continued learning through the COVID-19 pandemic. RDF students and teachers experienced new ways to learn and teach that will help us learn and teach better in the future because we practiced responsibility, discipline, and fortitude at home and online.
Graduation was wonderful for our Grade 12 Senior students, and we have 43 students going abroad to colleges and universities this Fall! They will go to wonderful universities to further their education and prepare for a joyful family life. We wish them the sweetest joys and successes that life has for them and their families.
All of these happy memories, and many more, make me proud of you and of our school—and especially how we have collectively practiced Responsibility, Discipline, and Fortitude during the 2019–2020 school year.
Regarding Closing Ceremonies
This year’s closing ceremonies were a success.
Students attended one of two ceremonies to facilitate physical distancing in our Auditorium. The groups were G7–8 and G9–11.
Both ceremonies included a principal’s speech, highlighting accomplishments from the school year, and a speech from outstanding graduate Emily Qiu (G12), offering encouragement to all students as they prepare for college applications and graduation.
Another highlight of the ceremonies were heartfelt expressions of appreciation for our outgoing Student Government President Cindy Bao and Vice President Maggie Xu, followed by The introduction and inauguration of the incoming Student Government President Rain Wu and Vice President Kelly Jie.
We also celebrated 162 students for earning high honors, 39 students for earning honors, and 26 students for earning honorable mention.

To Graduating Seniors:
Congratulations on your success! You are graduating high school! You made it!
You have studied and you have learned. Your accomplishments are the result of years of effort and hard work.
As you leave RDFIS, you are like young Eagles leaving the nest, spreading your wings to soar across the ocean to experience new worlds and to reach new heights.
Regardless of where you go, you will always have a home here. We look forward to seeing you again someday. You are always welcome here. We love you.
One of my many favorite rooms on campus is the biology lab. I have marveled at the fascinating experiments that students have performed here. There is something invigorating about this room where we learn about plants and animals. It is full of life.
Many of you have been involved in experiments like the one we see below, in which plants are grown in different conditions. They are given different nutrients, or different amounts of light. The plant’s growth is measured and the data is recorded.
It is clear from many experiments like this—here and in schools and universities all around the world—that plants thrive under optimum conditions. Environment and nutrition have a major impact on the growth of plants.
In many ways, people are similar to plants. Various factors affect our growth. Unlike plants, however, humans have free will. We can choose how we respond to the world and we can choose how we act. Nothing proves this better than the choices we make when responding to life’s difficulties.
Of course, we can’t choose everything. Some things just happen to us, like earthquakes and … pandemics.
Some forces in life are devastating, but, as powerful as they are, ultimately, we choose how we will face them.
You know this already. You all have had an unforgettable experience after finishing 12 weeks of online schooling! Online classes were the result of a force that was greater than you, than me, than the school: it was bigger than us all.
Some of you have suffered; I think we can all say that we suffered in our loss of each other: our time together in the school, which, sadly, we can never get back. It is truly a hardship to be separated from your friends, your teachers, and your lives at RDF.
Yet, in spite of this difficult situation, you chose to have a good attitude. You prepared yourself for a challenge and did your best. I know that it is difficult to be away from your teachers and friends. I have experienced that myself several times. As wonderful as Zoom and WeChat are, they cannot recreate the human and spiritual dimensions of actually being together: that feeling you get when someone is with you, someone who knows you, someone who cares about you. You feel a sense of familiarity being around another human being, a sense that here is someone like me; in a school you feel more than familiarity; you feel comfort.
As the American scholar and educator Neal Maxwell once said, overcoming suffering requires that we “endure bitterness without becoming bitter.” In other words, we need to endure and still be kind to others; we need to face our challenges with dignity and grace; and we should never stop seeking that human and spiritual connection even when—especially when—we are separated from others. Some of the greatest men and women the world has ever known have shown this kind of endurance.
Some people call this “grit.” Some call it “pluck.” I call it “joyful endurance.”
Joyful endurance is when we face difficulty without shutting down our emotions. Instead, we accept our feelings—good and bad—and we find meaning in how we feel, drawing strength from our past and trust that each day we will have the strength to deal with whatever comes our way.
Our challenges can make us stronger, purer; we can be refined through joyful endurance. Think of it this way: raw gold has to be heated to burn away the impurities. Our trials are like a fire that leaves us knowing ourselves better than we did before. The knowledge we gain is more valuable than gold.
So—while your future will include some difficulties, please remember that you can let those difficulties, and that suffering, refine you. You can be a great person by enduring difficulty and suffering.
I hope we never forget the amazing ability we have to make choices, for who we become is not so much determined by what happens to us, as by how we choose to respond to life’s difficulties.
Regarding Summer Family Education
Summer vacation is a time to accelerate our personal development by structuring our time to achieve goals.
We encourage students and families to reflect on their desires, hold family meetings to counsel together about their desires, write down goals, and proactively work together to bring about positive outcomes.
For all of us, improving our family relationships deserves our best efforts this summer.
Our children feel our love when we share our time with them and enjoy conversation and activities together.
We encourage families to establish routines to talk together, exercise together, share meals, travel together, and engage in wholesome recreational activities that create good feelings and meaningful memories.
Parents and children should set goals, both individually and as a family, and discipline themselves to achieve those goals.
We encourage reading good books , recording family histories, writing news/WeChat articles, capturing journal entries, penning letters of gratitude, or sending well written email suggestions to people in positions of influence.
We encourage planning and engaging in service projects , which can help you develop vision, planning, and leadership skills. Moreover, students can record service hours when they participate in meaningful service projects, such as Lambo’s litter removal project.
To ensure your growth is focused and efficient, we encourage parents and students to set specific limits on the time they spend on electronic devices, especially for video games, social media, and movies.
Instead of spending much time in digital media, engaging in personal conversations, reading books, and vacationing together can help us all educate our hearts and minds and create a beautiful culture in our family, community, provincial, and nation.
Sincerely,
—Leland Anderson
