On December 7th, SWIS had the pleasure to host “The Cradle to Nobel Laureates” lecture and information session, presented by Dave Micklos, D.Sc., and Catherine Zhang, MD. of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), based in New York, USA. SWIS community members as well as parents, teachers, and students from different campuses of Shenzhen Foreign Languages School and Baihe Foreign Languages school attended this event.

Dr. Micklos and Dr. Zhang began their lecture by introducing the history of CSHL and how the “Laboratory-style” teaching has grown and developed in 100 years. Using science education in American highschool as examples, the lecturers briefed the audience about the CSHL’s DNA learning center’s collaboration module in Asia, all the while putting an emphasis on “experiments” in biology education. At the end of the lecture, participants were given an opportunity to ask their burning questions about the CSHL and its DNA Learning Center.

In summer 2020, SWIS will begin the collaboration with CSHL by selecting 24 students, who have demonstrated a strong interest in life science, to attend a two-week academic program in New York. SWIS Grade 7 and Grade 8 students will be eligible for selection.

12月7日上午，來(lái)自美國(guó)冷泉港實(shí)驗(yàn)室的大衛(wèi)·米克勒斯博士和張曉群博士應(yīng)邀蒞臨我校，做題為《諾貝爾獎(jiǎng)的搖籃》講座和信息分享會(huì)。深外國(guó)際部、初中部、高中部、龍華高中部、龍華學(xué)校，以及深圳市百合外國(guó)語(yǔ)學(xué)校約200名學(xué)生、家長(zhǎng)和老師現(xiàn)場(chǎng)聆聽(tīng)講座。講座由深外國(guó)際部鄔曉莉校長(zhǎng)主持。

大衛(wèi)·米克勒斯博士和張曉群博士從冷泉港實(shí)驗(yàn)室的歷史談起，回顧了實(shí)驗(yàn)室的課堂模式在過(guò)去100年間的變化。他們從美國(guó)高中的科學(xué)技術(shù)教育切入，介紹了冷泉港實(shí)驗(yàn)室DNA學(xué)習(xí)中心在亞洲的合作模式，強(qiáng)調(diào)了“實(shí)驗(yàn)”在生物學(xué)習(xí)中的重要性。講座結(jié)束后，兩位專(zhuān)家還與現(xiàn)場(chǎng)的家長(zhǎng)和學(xué)生進(jìn)行了問(wèn)答互動(dòng)，對(duì)他們提出的問(wèn)題作了詳細(xì)解答。

2020年暑假，深外國(guó)際部與冷泉港實(shí)驗(yàn)室展開(kāi)合作，選送24名對(duì)生命科學(xué)感興趣的學(xué)生前往紐約參加為期兩周的學(xué)術(shù)交流項(xiàng)目。首批學(xué)生將在深圳外國(guó)語(yǔ)學(xué)校各校部七至八年級(jí)選出。

Students attending this learning experience will be able to carry out different themes of learning such as “DNA-Fun”, “Enzyme World”, and “Green Genetics”. In this 10-day learning experience, students will learn about DNA, exercise and develop their critical thinking and creativity through a series of experiments and hands-on activities. Students will also have a chance to visit the renowned Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and its DNA Learning Center Museum.

The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory
