Dear Families,

I hope that you see the upcoming two-week holiday as a great opportunity to talk to your child. A two-week, long-term“dialogue” may be a good opportunity for you to improve your relationship with your child.

In my nearly 40 years of life, the happiness that family relationships have brought me far exceeds other things in life.

Early in our marriage, my wife, Gina, expressed her gratitude for her parents’ routine of sitting on the family couchafter dinner, telling stories, and discussing the interesting ideas and events of the day. I, too, loved my parents’ tradition of frequently gathering our family to share ideas and stories. Gina and I have sought to establish a similar routine for our family of reading together and discussing important ideas, or just talking together about our lives and learning.

The result today is that Gina, my children,my parents, and my brothers and sisters have become my closest friends and the best teachers in my life. They may say the same about me. When we are together,we share the most interesting, insightful and extraordinary things in life and discuss the meaning behind it. We share important concepts and ideas and we learn together. This is always a great pleasure for me!

Remarkable research supports the emotional, intellectual, and social benefits of frequent conversation at home. A landmark study conducted in the early 1990’s is described in the book Meaningful Differences in the Everyday Experiences of American Children by Betty Hart and Todd Risely. In this study, the observers visited 42 families for an hour each week during multiple years. They recorded and analyzed the speech in these homes. Children whose parents spoke more often with them and more conversationally, developed vocabulary much more rapidly and broadly than children whose parents who spoke less or who tended to give directions rather than engaging in conversation and discussion. Although this study focused on young children, this principle holds true as we grow older. Conversation-rich,positive home environments contribute remarkably to a child’s social well-being, vocabulary, and intelligence far more than environments with fewer conversations.

Individuals and families who make a habit or routine of conversational discussion about the ideas, events, and meaningful moments of the day will accelerate their learning about the world, boost vocabulary growth and reasoning skills, and increase their mutual affection.During this extended vacation, give it a try and notice how you feel.

Congratulations to RDF Mock Trial (RDFMT)team members for finishing another wonderful semester of learning together. On Thursday night, 20 students displayed their commitment to the group’s core values, Justice and Integrity, by demonstrating an impressive mock trial for their peers. Vincent Zhao (RDFMT President) and Justin Wang (RDFMT Vice President) have helped the team learn the vocabulary and procedure of legal examination and cross-examinations in American courtrooms. The students now understand more the importance of advocacy, due process, fair trial, and timely trials—which understanding will contribute to justice and integrity for all.

With finals coming up next Tuesday–Thursday, remember the following study tips:

The art of memory is the art of understanding. If you truly understand something, you will be able to remember it.

Try explaining in your own words what you want to learn. If you can explain a concept to another person, do it. But if you are alone, even explaining a concept out loud to yourself helps.

Write a simple chart or diagram to help you organize what you are studying. Some common and helpful diagrams are timelines, comparison charts (T-charts or Venn diagrams), a flow chart, or a simple list.

In the season of Christmas—a month of celebrating peace and goodwill around the world—one simple way to share joy is to deliberately establish a personal, family, and collegial work culture of kindness and gratitude. The sincere use of “please” and “thank you” is a hallmark attribute of the most delightful people I have known. When speaking or texting with family, colleagues, students, parents, or strangers, these simple words build respect and appreciation. Let’s all resolve to use these words generously this year and always, in our school and in our homes. Our unity, learning, and progress accelerates as a result! Thank you, all!

Sincerely,
